AT HOME WITH... PIERRE EMMANUEL MARTIN
Our apartment
We’ve been here only for a year. The previous apartment had more of an “Italian Renaissance” style, it was a duplex that we had entirely repainted to black!
It was a love at first sight for this apartment, with its moldings, interior shutters, its corridors and wooden floors, the neighborhood and that it’s south-oriented.
And also for its structure and the size of each room that perfectly matched our way of living. We are having a lot of guests all the time. The kitchen has a central place because Stéphane loves to cook and we organize dinners all the time.
Our style
Even if we have some new elements, there are many objects in this apartment that we brought from our trips – baskets, ceramics, terracotta, wooden boards – mixed with beautiful design pieces of twentieth century and with works of artists we love.
The colors we choose are always very masculin.
I don’t like to follow trends. Our tastes are actually very constant – both at home and for others. Raw materials, plants, primitive or contemporary art… Things that are hand-made, respect for the nature and raw materials are essential in our work.
The decoration is…
It’s a story of a place, story of a life. We cannot get separated from things in such an easy way. We change, we move things but we keep everything.
And then we imagine places to live in: I love the apartments where all the rooms are used.
A place is above all friends, laughs, it needs to be designed to receive and to share moments. I cannot imagine to sacrifice friendliness in favor of aesthetics. Our vintage armchairs, large sofas Maison HAND Édition or our carpet in the living room were designed for it.
Our inspirations
Travels, museums, Axel Vervoordt decorations, a restaurant in Tokyo, a movie like Amore with Tilda Swilton or Danish Girl, and hotels, obviously.
Our artists
A photographer Félix Forest, Thomas Henriot, Françoise Petrovitch or Christine Crozat.
The most important interior element
The way that people live in. The way of being received and the possibility to come unexpectedly at any time. This is probably why I dream of a hotel!
Our weekends
Elsewhere for most of time. Between the mountains and la Drôme. And very often abroad for work.
But when we stay in Lyon, we go to a market, we cook, we receive others or are invited somewhere.
My firm favorites
Christian Astuguevieille’s sculpture.
Noguchi’s sofa.
Vicenzo De Cotiis’s leather sofas.
Apparatus Studio’s lightings
Lindsey Adelman’s lightings
Roll & Hill’s lightings
Lee Broom’s lightings
Erwin Olaf’s photos
El Anatsui’s art
To own…
Owning things is not necessarily what gives me the most of happiness. Just to know that they exist and that I can see them in a museum or at a gallery, that’s enough for me.
