IN THE CLOSET OF... MARGOT MUSSAT
My passion for the vintage
I love the vintage since I was a child, clothes that have a story. Either because they were worn by people I love or to project myself in a universe that is not my reality at that time.
For example I still wear Pucci dresses of my grandmother even if I have hard times to breathe with!
It’s weird but I love the idea not to be the first person wearing a cloth.
Me and brands…
I never wear the whole vintage outfit, I usually complete them with some new elements. But those elements are never very important, recognizable etc.
There are some beautiful clothes that I will keep for years: a coat Céline, black pants from Dries van Noten, The Row’s cashmere.
One thing is certain: I hate when we can easily recognize the brand from a cloth. For me showing the brand is an absolute lack of taste. I always remove all the labels! Maybe because I have been working in the luxury industry for so many years…
My signature
Jewelry and especially big earrings. I have dozens of them. They are from all over the world. It can be from Balmain or from Barbès market near my home.
I can go out without make up but never without them!
My outfits
Baggy pants and a knit sweater in winter. Many caftans in summer.
I’m not sure if I really have my favorite outfits! I like the idea of having fun and changing all the time. I can easily change my style from a very structured outfit into a real bohemian one.
There are some things that I wear for 20 years: my leopard raincoat bought for 50 francs at Porte de Clignancourt, Balenciaga’s black jacket I wear all the time. Also few clothes from Rick Owens that I love.
I am faithful. I keep clothes until the end of their lives.
Shoes
Shoes are a very important outfit element for me. I always start with them. With my three pregnancies, I wear less and less high heels (except for the photos!).
I like masculine shoes like loafers, derbies, boots or flat boots.
I love my “jewelry” shoes from Manolo Blahnik that I can’t imagine to stop wearing one day. Otherwise I buy at Celine, & Other Stories, The Row or Prada.
Fashion
I don’t do a lot of shopping, because I keep everything and don’t throw anything!
And because “the purchase for the purchase” doesn’t really work for me. Shopping is too much associated to my job.
I am increasingly attentive to the brands I buy my clothes at: they must be environmentally aware and responsible. I advise my clients on that matter in particular, so I pay a lot of attention to this subject in my personal life too. For example I buy one pair of jeans per year (Balenciaga in general).
I fell in love with Dries van Noten’s or Céline’s prints. I love Céline’s silhouette.
The Row that I love because it’s a mix between Jil Sander version 90s and Céline.
So I’m not really sensitive to trends because I see at work what will be fashionable in one and half year, two years.
The only places I buy a lot of things are cosmetic shops abroad, especially in Asia: bookstores and museum shops (like the one of Art Deco). And I have just discovered a great website that collect them all: Shopatthemuseum.
The perfect suitcase
I travel all the time for my job because I have a lot of clients abroad, especially in New York. So I became a real professional of packing! I only take clothes that can get rolled without wrinkling and clothes that can be worn day or night – just like my leopard raincoat!
Bags
It’s been a long time I haven’t buy any bag. My last firm favorite was a vintage bag at Vestiaire Collective.
I like Isaac Reina’s (rue de Sévigné) bags. He used to work for Hermès and his bags are handmade in Paris, they have an incredible quality. I break down every time I pass by!
Extravagance
Hermes coat, amazing and obviously unaffordable.
Precious or costume jewelry
I am not a fan of precious jewelry. I don’t wear any, apart from a ring given by my father. I don’t dream of having big stones.
My muses
Women who changed their societies and who created their own personalities in a business where no one expected them.
These women decided to accomplish their dreams like the first aviator to cross the Pacific in the 1930s Amelia Mary Earhart or Dian Fossey who dedicated her life to gorillas of Rwanda: but it has nothing to do with fashion!
Individuals are those who inspire me.
