CATHERINE MIKOLAJCZAK, FOUNDER OF THE 42B GALLERY
In the morning
At 9 o’clock the home is already calm. My husband wakes up early and I help my children to go out to school. We are very organized and complementary.
I make myself a coffee: I can’t do anything without!
Your pro pedigree
Art studies at Ecole du Louvre, then a career in fashion, luxury and international purchases areas. It was a working girl life, working a lot and traveling all the time. A lot of satisfaction but even more of frustration because I couldn’t have always been there for my two daughters.
My mom was a gallery owner and I told myself that I will also open mine at some point.
I could do it thanks to my husband. He encouraged me to do it and at first I imagined a concept of a “home-gallery”. I started my first events with collectors in my own house where people could buy everything: objects and works of art.
La galerie 42b is three years old and today it is a gallery that develops thanks to its rich and varied artistic selection, big events in Paris and a good visibility thanks to the collectors abroad.
My artists
The urban contemporary art has become an obvious form of art to me. By taste, by envy. I had the chance and intuition to make a good choice of incredibly talented artists. Especially Hopare. This meeting was very important. And then there was the one I made with some members of the collective Da Mental Vaporz, a European collective that counts nowadays.
42b gallery is today a dozen of artists.
With each of them I have quite exceptional relations. I try to represent them the best I can, in the most sincere way. We discuss a lot about their works, colors. I can even be critical! It’s very spontaneous and natural as relationship. I feel a little bit like a “gallery-conductor”!
A typical day
I am always looking for a new talent via Internet and social networks. I also organize the whole communication, the website content and the relations with collectors I work with. Not to mention the whole work when I’m having an exhibition period. All days are different and that’s a good thing!

Your Mantra
Nothing is impossible. Just do it.
My worst and best memories at the same time
Before a vernissage on Thursdays (18:00)!
And 24 hours before a vernissage – I don’t sleep. But it’s such an excitement in the same time…
Your advice to launch a business
Having a real business plan. Being realistic about your own capabilities and skills, the reality of the area you want to start in etc. You must think big but be realistic in the same time.
Next challenges
My gallery that will open in September 2016 in the 3e arrondissement in Paris.
Creating my events in Paris and abroad. In Montréal to start.
A time off
During my honeymoon in India for the first time in years… What a joy.
At the same time my job is my passion, I never see it as a restraint and I don’t really feel the need to take a break.
A “Slow life” thing
To step back and to be more creative, I need to sleep and to spend some time with my children.
What did you learn from your mistakes
Everything. This is super important if we can see them and understand them. I also teach this to my children: to become responsible for your own failures.
As a child, I dreamt of being…
In the light!
An advice
To remain honest with yourself and the others.
A dream
To create a residence for artists in the south of France and also to start creating. I think I’m an artist inside!
